History of Edgewood and Rhode Island Avenue
An estate, a railroad, a streetcar line and one of Metro's first stations.
1865
Salmon P. Chase builds Edgewood
Chase, Lincoln's Treasury secretary and later chief justice, finished his estate at what is now 4th and Edgewood streets NE. The neighborhood takes its name from it.

Edgewood on the map
A survey shows Kate Chase's 39-acre Edgewood beside Rhode Island Avenue and the Metropolitan Branch railroad, which opened in 1873.

DC's first electric streetcar
The Eckington and Soldiers' Home Railway opened on Oct. 17 and ran to a car barn at 4th and T streets NE, a quarter mile south of today's Strada.

Open land along Rhode Island Avenue
A real estate atlas shows Rhode Island Avenue crossing 4th Street NE and the Metropolitan Branch tracks. The land east of 4th Street, where Strada stands today, was mostly open, with a few buildings along the avenue.

Rhode Island Avenue station opens
The station opened on March 27 with Metro's first trains, as the eastern end of the Red Line.

Strada condos go on sale
The building opened in 2021 as the Rialto apartments. In 2026 it was renamed Strada and its homes went on sale as condos.
