History of Florida Avenue NE

From the edge of the 1791 city to Union Market and H Street.

  1. 1791

    Boundary Street

    Florida Avenue began as Boundary Street, the north edge of the city in the 1791 plan. It was renamed Florida Avenue in the 1890s.

  2. 1864

    Gallaudet becomes a college

    President Lincoln signed the act on April 8 that let the school on Florida Avenue grant college degrees.

  3. 1917

    Gallaudet in World War I

  4. 1931

    Union Terminal Market opens

    Wholesalers and farmers moved to a new market off Florida Avenue. Its 1967 market building reopened in 2012 as the Union Market food hall.

  5. 1938

    The Atlas opens on H Street

    The Atlas opened as a movie theater. It reopened in 2005 as the Atlas Performing Arts Center.

  6. 2004

    A Metro station at Florida Avenue

    The station now called NoMa–Gallaudet U opened on Nov. 20, the first station added between existing Metro stops.

    The Sidney
